Hole in the Wall San Diego Retreat: One Bunk Barrio

This was our first time experiencing San Diego, none of our friends or family had been before, and we did struggle a bit in getting advice on where to stay while we were there. We wanted a place that was close enough to everything so we didn’t have to travel miles to get anywhere (as we mention in The Ultimate Instagram Tour of San Diego this is not a problem when travelling in San Diego). We also wanted a place that matched our vibe and style, it always needs to be in line with our style and Liam makes very sure of that. After scrolling through countless San Diego Airbnbs, we came across One Bunk Barrio, and we never looked back. From the get go, this was definitely the place for us to call our home for our time in San Diego.

San Diego was the first stop on our American tour, and after the monster flight from Brisbane to San Diego (with connection in Honolulu), we arrived at close to midnight, and boy were we ready to catch some serious z’s. Thankfully One Bunk were absolutely top notch in providing us all the information we needed for check-in at the Airbnb, it was a total breeze.

Arriving at midnight we didn’t get a good view of the neighbourhood upon arrival, it was completely dark so we honestly felt like we were in the middle of nowhere, but we could not have been more wrong. In the morning, we stepped out our front door to the very bustling and character-filled suburb of Barrio Logan. With a strong influence of its Latin heritage, and a bustling inner-city creative artistic feel, Barrio Logan is centrally located 15 minute’s walk from downtown San Diego and feels like you are living amongst true San Diego locals. To add to our location, delicious aromatic coffee is being freshly brewed right across the road at Café Moto, and best of all One Bunk gave us a complimentary coffee card each, to get us started for day 1 of adventuring.

Now the place itself, at first glance outside it doesn’t look like much, a very understated white building, but that kind of adds to the vibe of this place, it understates and then over delivers. Stepping in the front door you’re welcomed home by very authentic and classic modern furnishings, with every piece purposefully placed and playing it’s part in pulling off a stunning living room. A small nook is off to the side with a reading chair, perfect for bathing in the sunlight of the large windows looking out to the bustling neighbourhood going by.

Then the bed, well, as mentioned, we had just come off a huge journey to get from Australia to San Diego, and so night one our love of the bed can easily be attested to the fact we were exhausted. However, our adoration for the bedding continued well into our stay and this is owing to its comfort, size and the positivity that radiates all around with artwork adorning the wall above the bed exclaiming WOW. That’s exactly what you’re thinking when you’re laying there, wow… this place is amazing. However absolutely gorgeous and top notch the interior is and we certainly loved it, we’ve saved our favourite spot for last. The back yard.

The back yard is a photographer’s dream, and the perfect place to spend an afternoon with a chilled beverage (One Bunk offer your first craft beer from the mini bar complimentary, so Jake took advantage of this of course). It’s the perfect mixture of inner urban garden sanctuary. With shipping containers, deck chairs, fairy lights, cacti and plants and trees everywhere, it was one of our favourite things about our time in San Diego, and it was all for us. The yard does back onto another business, but they were rarely there and they let us have free reign to enjoy how we wished. This did include a full Liam-style photo shoot and we got some amazing footage out of it. This beautiful space is also hired out for events and functions, and it’s no surprise that its popular, with it’s tempting outdoor urban charm.

One Bunk Barrio, is a definite must for your next trip to San Diego. It is perfect for couples, solo adventurers, or even a pair of friends, as it really provides you a home away from home and lets you feel like a true San Diego local. It was very easy to get around everywhere, there is a shopping centre just up the road with everything you need, and the suburb itself has a relaxed feel about it.

One Bunk also have the cutest retro bikes available to use to get you around the rider-friendly San Diego streets. Plus, if you’re lucky enough to stay here on a Friday and want to put some radiance in your day, just next door One Bunk offer Bunk Yoga weekly from 12pm-1pm, which is a free community yoga session with an open door policy. It’s soooo San Diego.

One Bunk also have amazing spaces available in Tijuana and Ocean Beach, and we are definitely bookmarking their Ocean Beach beach house for our next trip to SD. Check the listing out here on Airbnb.
