Christmas 2017 was a Christmas of many firsts. It was our first Christmas spent together and also our first Christmas away from our family and friends in a city neither of us know very well. Being sent to Perth over Christmas for work was at first a disheartening reality, neither of us wanted to leave our family and friends behind, nor did we want to feel as though we were working over Christmas. Thankfully, Alex Hotel was the perfect place for our stay in this beautiful west coast city and made this trip feel like anything but a work trip. After much time spent researching spaces available in Perth, we kept coming back to the very chic and stylish hotel. This boutique hotel is located in Perth’s vibrant Northbridge neighbourhood, just a 2-minute walk from Perth railway station and the CBD.
Alex Hotel is anything but your normal hotel stay. The thought and detail put into the design of this hotel, emanate a calming atmosphere for guests, with rooms that dare you to slumber all day, and communal spaces that make you forget you aren’t in your own home. The level of comfort in this hotel is unmatched in any we have ever stayed at before.
Each morning guests are treated to a delicious banquet of muffins, fresh bread, decadent fruits and yoghurts, and cereals to please the morning tummy rumbles. The onsite receptionists/baristas/all-round-lovely hosts are on call to make whatever caffeine concoction you desire, and a selection of breakfast juices are handy to quench your thirst. Included in the very reasonable rates, this daily breakfast was the perfect start to our mornings, before we pulled ourselves away from this masterpiece of a hotel to explore the city.
Our favourite thing about Alex Hotel was the free vintage bike hire they offered us. These vintage bikes are not only absolutely drop-dead gorgeous, they are also the perfect tool for discovering this very rider-friendly city. Neither of us are fitness fanatics, enjoying the occasional gym sesh very rarely. However, we spent the entirety of Christmas day cycling around Perth, from the beautiful peaks of Kings Park, to the breezy river front bike way, we explored nooks and crannies of Perth that we had missed in all of our previous trips here. It was from the shade of a palmtree, perched atop the Kings Park cliffs, that we wasted away the hours dozing in the cool shade and soaking in the calm atmosphere we had never experienced on a Christmas day before.
Returning from our day of cycle adventuring through Perth, Alex welcomed us back with open arms. A self-serve honesty bar located in the communal dining area boasts a selection of craft beer, ciders, wines and soft-drinks. This bar came in much use as we enjoyed a chilled beverage above the city skyline on the rooftop terrace. Watching the sunset over the Perth CBD, when we weren’t snapping photos we spent time soaking up the ambience and reflecting on a Christmas day that topped both of our lists.
Everything about Alex Hotel is pleasing to the eye and warming to the soul. The bedroom is beautifully and simply furnished, the sheets boasting a thread count we could only dream of having in our own beds. The communal areas boast art deco meets modern furnishings, with ultimate comfort, and the library and games selections available to choose from, encourage you to inhabit and live in these spaces. The staff were undeniably the most friendly and homely group you could come across. Not only were they working over the Christmas period away from their own families, they were overwhelmingly cheery and provided good banter and tips for our stay.
Perth is a city with many hidden treasures and Alex Hotel is certainly one treasure we will be going back for.
